Former Wetumpka Wrestler Shot, Killed by Campus Officer at Univ. of South Alabama

By Heather VacLav

Friends of the Wetumpka freshman who was shot and killed at the University of South Alabama are shocked and questioning the shooting by a campus police officer.
Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, University officials say 18-year old Gil Collar of Wetumpka charged the officer naked. They say he ignored repeated commands to stop, forcing the officer to fatally shoot him once in the chest.
Collar's friends say he was an outgoing high school athlete who loved wrestling at Wetumpka High School. Some don't believe the officer should have drawn his weapon on an unarmed person.
Local prosecutors are investigating the shooting. The officer involved is on paid leave, and an autopsy will determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Campus officials say the confrontation was recorded by security cameras.

and to the comments of truth below. no loss to the gene pool? he was son, brother, friend. a good kid that made a mistake. and paid for that mistake w/his life. i would hope compassion would be a trait that remains in our gene pool not the cold heartless trait that you exude. i've know this kid since he was in 1st grade. he was a good kid from a great family.

The young man was naked, obviously unarmed. He was running to a police station, maybe looking for help..? The officer does not have the wit it takes to be a police officer.

i agree completely. the cop is still on the loose i wouldnt consider it safe. i know the student personally. and to be honest he could have tazed him he could have pepper sprayed him he could have even shot him in the leg. but no a cop thinks the badge makes him untouchable, but it doesnt. he was naked what kinda weapon could he have possibly had. come on, really?

One can only act like a moron as long as it does not endanger someone else. The office was protecting himself from this adult. The human gene pool did not loss anything.

Is this what we can expect when we send our kids to college? Sounds like this kid needed help. If this happened at a police station then why didn't this officer call for back-up? Surly he wasn't alone at the station. Something with this story just doesn't sound right.
