Police Ask Residents to Look for 'Dangerous Man' Last Seen Near Fitzpatrick Elem.
Police are telling people in a south Montgomery neighborhood to watch out for a man suspected of stealing a car who they say is dangerous. Authorities say the suspect is an African American man wearing all black with a slender build and dreadlocks.
The manhunt started around 7:30 Friday morning. For several hours, police blocked off Virginia Loop Road while they scoured the woods nearby with K-9 units, vehicles, helicopters and 4-wheelers
Police Chief Kevin Murphy says the man they are looking for was driving this stolen truck. Murphy says when an officer pulled the man over, he got out of the truck waving a gun and then ran away dropping his gun.
"We have reason to believe we have been looking for this suspect for a while," he says.
Murphy believes the man is responsible for other car thefts in the area, which is why he is determined to catch him.
But as the day went on, there were no signs of the man, and police pulled back resources.
"If we don't capture this guy today, this was not a failure," Murphy says. "We learned a lot. We used our resources. We used our equipment. Our officers got some training today."
The manhunt took place near two elementary schools, Fitzpatrick and Peter Crump, which were on lock down the entire day. Police officers stayed on school grounds until parents picked up the students after school.
"I initially came down the road and saw all the police cars. I was nervous. I didn't want to drop them off," says Santana Turner.
Her son is a student at Fitzpatrick Elementary.
"The teacher called me. The principal called me. I think they handled it very well, and for what I saw, the MPD presence I think they handled it well too," she says.
Alabama News Network has talked to lot of neighbors who are worried this man police are looking for could be a murder suspect, but police say the identity is still unknown.
Police are asking if you see him to call 911 immediately.
