Pike Co. Humane Society Offering Discount to Spay, Neuter Your Pet

By Brittany Bivins

As many Alabama humane societies and animal shelters are cutting back, the Pike County Humane Society is offering another service to county residents.

The Humane Society will pay $50 for your pet to get spayed or neutered at a Pike County veterinary clinic. Each year, the Pike County Humane Society provides the service to about 300 pets.

Anyone who lives in Pike County or has a Troy University ID is eligible. Humane Society volunteers say it saves money in the long term by preventing overpopulation.

"One day, when we get the shelter open, when we have the money to do it and the money to maintain it for cats and dogs, then this way it reduces the number that have to go there," said Susan Jinright, Humane Society Treasurer.

If you want to participate in the program, you can call one of four Pike County vets, including Jones Animal Clinic in Brundidge, Troy Animal Clinic, Trojan Animal Clinic or Pike Animal Hospital.

The organization depends on fundraisers for the money to provide this and other services to animals in Pike County. Last year, the Humane Society raised $12,000 printing its annual calendar, which features pictures of local pets.

Humane Society volunteers say they need to continue to raise money to care for local strays and provide services to lower-income families. If you can help, you can call 807-0002 to make a donation.
