Parent Files Bullying Claim Against Chilton Co. Schools

By Catalina Trivino

A Chilton County family is accusing the school system of neglecting to act on bullying in one of its schools after a parent files a claim saying their child was beat up at his school.

We're revealing the story behind a video of a teen beaten up in a school bathroom. And that student's parents say there was not enough disciplinary action taken against the students involved in that incident -- so she's taking action.

The cell phone video is low quality, but  one family says what's happening at this Chilton County Trade School is clear.

"It's awful... I'd never think something like that would happen to one of my kids. You don't know what you're seeing in your kids' school," Said the teen's mother, who we are not identifying.

In this video, the mother says it's her 16-year old son battling a beating in this crowded bathroom. The teen's mother says her son was the target of bullying that included physical assault ranging from being slapped in the classroom to being body-slammed in the bathroom not once, but twice.

Later, she says you see him being dragged into a bathroom stall and left there knocked unconscious.... eventually leading him to the emergency room.

It's a video she says is every parent's nightmare. And she feels the school system isn't doing enough to prevent bullying.

"It makes me angry at the school that would let something like this happen and I ... I don't really know how to explain it," Said the victim's mother.

Now, she's filing a claim against the Chilton County School system and attorneys are asking for a response back from school system officials or the school board's attorney within the next 10 days, indicating the steps that will be taken for further disciplinary measures to resolve the claim. She says suspensious given to the other students involved weren't enough.

"Bullying... I've had several other bullying cases come to me and I've had several schools in town and you know we've taken action, but this is the worst case," Said the victim's attorney, Julian McPhillips.

I know this happened and heard teachers talk about letting it happen. Parents do need to teach respect at home and a lot of us have. But notice that respectful children get abused at school. In school we trust the teachers and admin to protect children. They don't -some teachers are scared of their students. It is time Chilton County BOE steps in and puts a stop to this behavior. Suspended?? How about juvenile boot camp in Prattville area?? Teach these kids some real respect before we have another suicide or out right murder. It is happening everywhere and we should stop it while we still can.

Take the tax money that the public schools get and give it to parents to pay for private school for there children OR to pay for home school...It is all about who you know not what you know in Chilton County.

Not only is it the students the Teachers are no better. They talk and say things to these children then when it is time for conference they have so many witness' but in reality half of them don't really know what's going on. They lie, cover up a lot of things in these Chilton County schools and this has not just started it has been going on for years, Then they will throw your kid in alternative or maybe worse....but they allow employees to act on incidents if their child is involved...and it's just not fair!! I'm very sorry for what happen to this child and time we as parents take a stand!! Family, you're in my prayers!! We love our children too!! God Bless!!

My prayers go to the family of all the bullied victims. Chilton county schools put Nothing but a front on when it comes to bullying. They are not trying to help just make themselves look good. They always blame the parents but I have had several trips to the schools because of the teachers doing the name calling in front of other students. That makes the kids hearing think it's OK. The problem is the teachers in the school not the parents. It's funny because they never take the blame for their actions just put off on everybody else. Sad but in this county it's all about who you know in the schools, courts, etc. Unless you know somebody you can't get any results.

MY CHILD WAS ALSO BULLIED AT THIS SAME SCHOOL!!! said on Wednesday, Oct 16 at 9:00 AM

My daughter was jumped in the hallway at this same school by another girl. She took the high road and didn't fight back so when punishments were hannded out my daughter was given early morning detention and the other girl was given nothing more than 3 days suspension. I tried to press charges bbut the our oh so great legal system here in chilton co told me that there was nothing i could do cause the school handled it. My daughter is friends with the boy that this happened to and I saw the video myself i hope some light is shed on this problem cause as long as the school continues to save face by sweeping this problem under the rug then its only going to geworse.

I feel like the kids that did this to this boy should be punished to the fullest extent to a juvenile law will allow. It's rediculous that people try to justify what their kids do even when they are in the wrong.. Stand up and be the adult what if this was your child..

This is horrible , I worry every day about something like this. It should not be left up to the school system when something like this happens or any kind of bullying . It should be charges against the kids who do this and not just a slap on the hand . They should be held accountable for what they do even for for first offence then if the bully got in enough trouble they would not have a second or more . I thought there was a 0 tolerance for bullying? what about that ?

Of this they will have to give an account before God on Judgment Day!!! If we were all created the same what boring world this would be! Back when "bullying" didn't have a name I was my brother's Defender thru life, he was born with Noonan's Syndromn and his "difference" led him to a life a recluse where he died at the age of 31...Stand up for your children & teach your children to that they can talk to you about "anything"!!!!

Bully NO More !!!!!!! said on Tuesday, Oct 15 at 7:38 PM

I know for fact that 2 years ago a young man was beaten so badly he was taken to the hospital for broken collar bone and other injuries, and one child who was involved was related to a School Board Member and nothing was ever done to these bullies. The child that was injured had a wreck 2 months later and is now in a wheel chair for life. No charges were brought as they seemed it not important due to his accident. Chilton County has there own way of law.....They make them as they go !!!

If u want the truth then u should ask some of the kids that were there. from what I was told the one who got his but kicked was the one who started that fight that day plus bullying had nothing to do with it. he was never drug and left in the stall. the boy who body slammed him actually helped him up and got him to get ready to go back to school. seems like some people need to do some investigation before charges get filed and kids need to tell the truth and the parents need to listen.

Chilton County is most definitely one of the counties with the most school bullying. I as a parent have been bullied by the administration. How do you expect them to stop kids from bullying other kids if them themselves are bullies? There have been at least 2 suicides and then the boy last year that was beat to death. Nothing was ever done about this. I guess until it happens to a kids with family ties to someone important in the community, nothing will be done about it. SAD!!!!!

It starts at home. Parents must learn their children to respect others. But most parents just want them out of their way. So this is where the school must step in. When the board says no Bullying, make a believer out of the kids. I do believe junivile hall would be better thn sitting at home on the computer or phone. We must stop this. I have a grand daughter and I do worry about her.but I will hanle it for her if needed. I will not stand by and watch these punks drive her to her death.

No no no! Yes blame the school! Where were the school officials when all hell was breaking loose in this bathroom? Ive seen many fights in a school but never one where a teacher etc wasnt in the middle immediately! Zero excuse! I do not send my child into a school that is so "protective" of their students that we as parents get grilled like a steak for walking our child to class in the mornings bc we could be dangerous and they need to protect them. No. No!!!!!! They are not protecting our children from the people locked away in this "safe" school with them. Where are the teachers????? Where? And yes Ive been employeed in a school and know exactly how it works!

I think it is about time someone is challenging the school board about this. It is a shame that children are scared to go to school because they are picked on and bullied. We are trusting our children and their lives in the hands of the school board and they should be responsible and take appropriate action to ensure that this type of thing does not happen in the schools. There should be a policy requiring those caught bullying to be put in jail. It is harassment and assault and should be dealt with as such. Forget suspension--that is a vacation for the kids...a reward for their actions. Send them to a juvenile detention and let the courts deal with them. My children have to deal with this problem everyday...even my son has had a gun pulled on him away from school and by an older kid, and he is only 11. Something has to be done, and I am proud to know that their are parents willing to stand up and say "Enough is enough!"

I understand that bullying is a real problem. But to place all the blame on the school system is ridiculous! It is the parents' responsibility to teach their children to respect others. Wake up, people!

Chilton County is not, by far, the worst in the state, and it is definitely not corrupt. I am a 2010 graduate of CC, and one of my friends was one of the "suicides" mentioned before. It is true that bullying is a problem, and that more strict punishments should be levied, but let's not blame the whole county. Every child goes through bullying at some point in their life - even the "popular crowd", and like I said before I've seen many school systems (especially private schools) where bullying is way worse than it is here.

Hasn't there already been 2 deaths (both by suicide) in the Chilton County school district due to children being bullied? How many more does there need to be before something is done to permanently fix the bullying situation there? My prayers are with this child and his family!
