Neighbors React: Woman Found Fatally Shot in North Mtgy. Neighborhood
Alabama News Network was first on the scene when police found a woman shot to death in a North Montgomery neighborhood. It's the city's 18th homicide of the year. Tonight, we speak exclusively with a witness who tells us police could have saved the woman's life.
Just before the morning rush hour, police blocked off Lower Wetumpka Road. Investigators say a woman was found on this front lawn shot to death.
"She's dead! She's dead!" says a witness who wants to keep her identity hidden for safety reasons. "I came out of my mother's house about like 6:30 this morning when the young lady was taking her kids to school, and the kids spotted the lady."
This witness says a woman in her mid 20s was shot around 2 a.m., and says her nephew called the police. But she says only one officer drove out to the scene, and he never got out of his car. She says if the police had walked around, he would have spotted the victim.
"Maybe her life would have been saved once they called the cops, and the cops came out and investigated like they should have," she says.
Mary McKenzie lives a few doors down from the scene and is in charge of the neighborhood watch group.
"Several of us have said that something bad was going to happen, and it was going to take it before the Montgomery Police understands that North Montgomery really needs their help," she says.
McKenzie says most nights she wakes up to the sound of gunshots, and in the last week alone, "I have probably witnessed about eight."
Judy Mims also lives near the scene. She's hoping this incident is a wake up call for police.
"We will hear gun shots in the middle of the night," says Mims. "Maybe they could boost up patrol out here."
Even though the crime tape was taken down, neighbors say the problem will linger.
"I know they are fixing up neighborhoods, and maybe they could start with this one," says Mims.
We did ask police if they responded to a call around 2 a.m., and if they did get out of their car to look around. They say that is part of the investigation.
Police are still searching for the motive and the suspect(s). They have not yet released the name of the victim. If you have any information on this shooting you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (334) 215-STOP.
