Multi-Car Accident Leaves One Dead

By Morgan Hightower

At approximately 5:40 Sunday morning, a single-vehicle crash occurred on I85 northbound at the 26 mile marker.

Moments later, three other vehicles collided at the same location causing two injuries and northbound traffic to come to a halt.

As a result, a northbound 2000 Kenworth 18-wheeler collided into the rear of a 2006 Kia Sorento.

The Kia was pushed into an International 18-wheeler.

The rear passenger in the Kia, Alice Marie Summers, 52, was killed in the collision.

The driver of the Kia, Henry Lee Davis, 65, also from Valley, was seriously injured and transported to Baptist South by Air-Evac.

The front passenger, Barbara Summers, 54, also from Valley, was injured and transported to Baptist South by ambulance.

The driver of the Kenworth 18-wheeler was James Edward Brooks, 49, of Franklin, NC.

Brooks and his passenger were not injured.

The driver of the International 18-wheeler, Ronnie Pinson, 61, from Bowling Green, KY was not injured.

A fourth crash (single-vehicle) occurred at the same location on the southbound side due to the driver being distracted by the crash.

The driver and passenger of that vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The Alabama Department of Transportation and the Macon County Sheriff’s Department re-routed northbound traffic onto US 80 from exit 22.

Macon County Volunteer Fire Departments from Shorter, District 3 and Franklin as well as the VA Fire Department responded to assist.

I85 northbound was re-opened at 3:30 p.m.
