Montgomery Residents Voice Concerns About City

By Ashley Thompson

If you could ask the Montgomery Mayor, the Public Safety Director, or the Police Chief one question, what would it be?  Alabama News Network took to the streets to find out what some of your biggest concerns are.

Montgomery has 21 homicides so far this year and that number has many people alarmed. To help stop some of the violence, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange has publicly called on churches to get more involved in the community. But not everyone knows what it is the church can do. Liz Boyd of New Life Church says she'd like more details from the Mayor.

"What specifically can we do?" she asks. "I mean, we have churches all over the city and we just really feel like if they could, come with us and give us specific details on how we can be more involved."

Others want answers from Police Chief Kevin Murphy. Terrell Taylor says he believes Montgomery police don't have their priorities in order.

"We've got a lot of unsolved murders and they're focusing they're attention on the wrong thing," says Taylor. "They're focusing on insurance and locking people up for tickets."

One Montgomery resident tells us she'd ask what could be done about some of the abandoned buildings around town.

"I would ask the Mayor what his plans are for some of the vacant property here on the west side," says resident Sherry Davis. "I'm concerned because people hang out in these abandoned properties and it just makes the neighborhood look bad."

Others tell us they're concerned with another part of their neighborhood, the roads.

"There's a lot of streets that need to be fixed and that are not fixed," says Bernice Hines. "But when you go out on the interstate and different places, they're fixing it up and doing that. They won't even fix mine in our neighborhood and we pay city tax just like everybody else."
