Montgomery Police Dog Hero, Bodi, Dies at 11

By CBS 8 News

The Montgomery Police Dept. has made the sad announcement that retired police dog hero Bodi has died at 11 years old.

Police Chief Kevin Murphy says Bodi died Saturday night at Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital following a sudden illness.

Murphy said Bodi, who has experienced several health concerns as he has aged, became ill late Saturday afternoon.

Bodi, a German shepherd, was honorably retired from service in January while recovering from a December 2011 injury in the line of duty. Bodi was shot and wounded after he and his police handler responded to a report of an armed robbery of a business..

The two tracked the suspect into a neighborhood, where Bodi discovered him hiding in a storage building behind a home. While attempting to apprehend the suspect, Bodi was shot in the face several times and lost one eye.

Bodi enjoyed life after retirement at home with his handler and family. He continued to serve with occasional visits to local elementary schools.

Murphy says the department is making plans for a private burial.
