The recent string of murders in Montgomery has Police looking at strategies on how to bring down crime numbers... strategies, they're already putting into place.
There have been five homicides in the city of Montgomery the last 10 days -- a scary number in a short amount of time -- so Montgomery city leaders say they're stepping it up to halt the rising numbers.
"We're going to take every legal means available to us to get the bad guys, and to get the illegal guns and the illegal action off the street," Said Montgomery Mayor, Todd Strange. He was one of dozens of Montgomery city leaders who spoke during Monday's news conference to ease concerns after a sudden spike in violent crimes this year.
But there's good news -- Montgomery Police now have a new plan to target gun crimes called the Illegal Gun Initiative. They're doubling-up efforts to combat illegal gun use in hope of driving down crime.
"We're looking at data from throughout the city on crime maps, where some of the illegal gun activity is occuring. And we're using personnel and resource management to send officers into those areas to try to get these illegal weapons off the street," Said Montgomery Police Chief, Kevin Murphy. He said they've been testing the initiative this week. They're focusing on areas with heavier crime, doubling the amount of officers on patrol and t doing over-time.
And so far... they've made more arrests. Murphy said in the last six days, police have recovered 38 illegal guns, but the community needs to be just as proactive as police.
"Law enforcement cannot operate in isolation. It has to be a partnership between the community, the citizens and the officers. Standing alone is not going to work, but standing together... we'll definitely solve this problem," Said Murphy.
Montgomery Police are asking that if you know of any illegal activity going on, or somebody who has a gun and intends to use it illegally... they're urging you to let law enforcement know what's going on.
Montgomery police say they hope this initiative will drop the city's homicide rate lower than last year's, which had a total of 32 homicides.
