Mixed Feelings Over Women in Combat
It's about equality... giving military women the same rights as military men.
Women will now be able to serve on the front lines of combat after the Pentagon lifted the ban Thursday.
People we talked to have different viewpoints on the situation.
"If that's their choice to join the military and they want to serve their country, they feel like they want to be on the front line like the men... I think it's their choice," said Brenda Palmer.
Women will now be able to serve in the higher military positions and perhaps even elite units like the Navy SEALs.
We asked CBS 8 fans on Facebook, what they thought.
Amber Lovett says, "I believe that if women want join and can meet the standards that they are required to meet, then let them stand proud on the front-line and fight for their country.God made us all equal. We breath the same, see the same, feel the same, and bleed the same."
But not everyone agrees.
Neil Hughes says, "The physical standards for military women are already lower. Which has been fine for the duties they currently do. However being on the front lines or more specifically, the elite fighting teams, are different and require much stress on the human body and mind. Keep in mind that men and women are 'equal' NOT 'same'."
And Jeremy Lawrence says, "we are supposed to protect our women, not send them to fight."
Vietnam veteran Craig Hubbard says he has a different opinion on women in war.
"I've served with women in combat situations before. They were not listed as combat personnel, but they were in the line of fire over in Nam. I saw a lot of them hold up a lot better under these situations than a lot of the men did. I think if the woman feels that she can handle it, let 'em!" says Hubbard.
It will be left up to the military service chiefs to decide whether women should be excluded from any of those more demanding and deadly positions, such as Navy SEALs or the Army's Delta Force.
