Miracle League Playground Complete

By Sarah Cantey

After more than a year and a half of planning and fundraising, Troy's Miracle League Playground is finally open.

For Austin Turner and Sheldan Sanders, it's more than a new place to play.

Michelle Phillips, Aunt of Sheldan said, "Life isn't as normal as it could be, or as others are and being here does allow him the access to be normal."

Norma Turner, Mother of Austin said, "Here we are with this playground. This is for them. Us parents can watch them and enjoy a big smile and not have to worry."

Those smiles are a testament to a community that came together. Getting the funding for the nearly quarter of a million dollar project.

Ivan Merritt,  Cochairman of Playground Committee said, "When you do put your resources together and everybody buys into it and commits to it, it's just amazing as to what can happen."

For nearly 20 months the city, county, Miracle League, universiy and exchange club kept the project moving forward. Creating a playground that's completely handicap accessible.

Michelle said, "He's looking forward to these swings over here because it locks him in and he don't have to worry about falling out."

Director Troy Parks & Rec Dan Smith said, "Anytime you can make a difference in the life of a person, but especially the life of a child, you know you've done the right thing."

This is just the first phase of the playground, project managers hope to add a fence, trees, even walking trails.
