Greenville Police are investigating their first homicide this year.

It happened at a small party on Cunningham Street around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say 29-year-old Jamaal Taylor from Fort Deposit got into a fight with another man outside of the house.

Police think it may have been over possible gambling in the front yard. Alcohol is also believed to have been a factor. It quickly escalated, shots were fired and police say Taylor's girlfriend was fatally shot. She was identified as 24-year-old Ashley McDonald.

Another bullet grazed the other man in the argument, but he had minor injuries that were treated at the scene.

Greenville Police Chief Investigator Justin Lovvorn said, "The people that tried to stop it or help, or the people that were there, that actually cared about the offender, is the one who got hurt. And it was just a wreckless act for no good reason."

Taylor faces one charge of murder and two charges of attempted murder.Additional charges are possible if police find evidence that there was actual gambling going on at the party.
