Local Charities Need Your Help this Holiday Season

It's almost that time of year....
While it is the season of giving...
Local charities tell us they are needing an extra hand this year.
That's inlcuding places like the Friendship Mission in Montgomery.

"We're being overwhelmed because we're getting more people. More people are coming in asking for more help," said director Ronald Smith.

The Friendship Mission serves about 75 people a day and houses 30 people a night.
One of those people is Jerry Stele who fell on hard times after losing a job.

"Well, this particular place means a second chance for myself. I'm here to basically to sit here and have God minister to me without any distractions of the outside street life or anything to that magnitude. But it's stability," said Stele.

Director Ronald Smith says money has been tight this year, and they need your help to keep their doors open.

"We are still asking people to come in and bring monetary, canned goods, soap, washing powder, razors, deodorant, anything you would have at home, we would love to have it too," said Smith.

The Salvation Army could use those items as well. The non-profit ogranization houses families, women and men in their shelters year long.
They serve 90 to 100 meals a day and are preparing for the  their big Thanksgiving meal.

"Last year we were blessed to give out about 350 plates," said Jason Davis, Salvation Army program director.

And they would gladly accept any donations over the holidays.

"Any desserts you guys have extra, any seasoning, cornmill, all that stuff will be greatly utilized this Christmas and Thanksgiving season," said Davis.

You can also always donate through the Salvation Army  Red Kettle campaign that will be starting soon.
