Cemetery Plans Fall Through at City Council Meeting

After numerous attempts to develop more than eight acres of land off Woodley Road, the land owner is rejected... Yet again.
The city council chambers were filled to capacity Tuesday night.
Residents stood up against one man's attempt to build a cemetery in west Montgomery.
The matter was brought before the council after the planning commission rejected the proposal.
Ted Hopkins has owned the almost nine acres of land on the Southside of Woodley road for 12 years.
He asked the council to rezone the area from single-family residential to general agriculture to build a cemetery.
The ordinance failed to pass and now, Hopkins says he's going to have to talk to his lawyer.
“This city has to grow. There has been absolutely no development on the entire Woodley road corridor. And the only people trying to do anything over there is me. And every time we do, we get the same neighborhood that says they don't want anything,” explains Hopkins.
“I definitely hope that after the healing process has taken place on both sides, that we can kind of come back together and realistically do to utilize that property, make communities happy, and the property owner happy as well,” said Councilman John Dow, Montgomery, District 6.
Hopkins says before the cemetery, he had plans to develop the land into an apartment complex and 300 home subdivision.
