Montgomery's Jubilee CityFest Will Not Return

By CBS 8 News

CBS 8 News Exclusive: CBS 8 News has confirmed that Montgomery's Jubilee CityFest, which has been around since 1976, will not be returning next year.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange has confirmed to CBS 8 News that Jubilee will be ending. As of Monday afternoon, the Jubilee CityFest website was still operating, with a "we look forward to seeing you next year" message on the home page.

Jubilee CityFest had been one of the city's signature events downtown. The annual weekend music  festival was operated by a 21-member board of directors, dozens of committees and hundreds of volunteers. According to its website, it had a $5.5 million economic impact.

Jubilee CityFest Executive Director Marianne McLeod would not comment to CBS 8 News. She was the festival's only paid year-round staff member.

In recent years, Jubilee underwent many changes to its format and schedule. It also faced new competition from other events taking place in the newly-transformed downtown area.

Stay with CBS 8 News for reaction on the demise of Montgomery's Jubilee CityFest.

Update: As of late Monday afternoon, Jubilee CityFest posted the following message on its website:

"Thank you all of your for supporting the festival all of these years. Our mission of assisting downtown become a thriving and vibrant area is accomplished. We will close the festival September 30, 2012. We want to thank all of the sponsors, city, state, volunteers and the patrons for supporting us in the good years and the lean years! You are the BEST!!"
