A local probate judge has announced his candidacy for Secretary of State...

Crenshaw County Probate Judge, Jim Perdue, says he'll be running for the Republican Party nomination in 2014. He announced the kick-off to his campaign at the Crenshaw County Courthouse on Tuesday.

Perdue has served as probate judge for 11 years. He is also a former businessman and worked in the construction industry for 25 years, as well as the Federal Reserve bank in Miami.

He says he plans to launch a tour to speak to as many people as possible across the state.

"We have military personnel scattered across this globe and they are fighting for the right to vote. We need to make sure that their ballots are given to them timely and that they're returned timely. We need to take advantage of every piece of technology that we've got in the 21st century to assure them that's going to happen," Said Perdue.

Perdue had been a democrat, but announced in April that he was switching to the republican party.

The primary elections will be held June 3, 2014.
