Jay Love Stepping Down from State House Seat

By Ellis Eskew

Republican State Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery announces he is resigning from the Alabama House effective Aug. 1. He says he wants to pursue business opportunities and to promote education reforms.

Love is the chairman of the House Ways and Means-Education committee that prepares the state education budget.

Alabama News Network talked to Love about his decision.

"I have other opportunities out there that have presented themselves. More will be known in a few weeks. But right now I feel like it's the right time for me to leave the legislature certainly with my family, where I am in business," said Rep. Love.

The news came as a surpsise to polictical analyst Steve Flowers.

"This is news statewide. From a public policy standpoint, Jay Love is a very powerful member of the legislature. In essence, he wrote the education budget, so when you look at the importance of public policy, his resignation is much more significant than Beth Chapman's last week," said Flowers.

Even though Love would not go into specifics on his new opportunities in the private sector, he says he has good memories of the past 11 years.

"I've enjoyed my time in the legislature, and it will be something that I will always hold dear," said Love.

Love's successor will be chosen in a special election to be called by Gov. Robert Bentley.
