I-85 Shutting Down For Outer Loop Project

Expect delays on I-85 starting this weekend.

Workers be shutting it down in the early hours of the morning, but it still might affect people's commutes. But this is just the beginning.

"It's not going to be just this weekend. It's going to be that Sunday through Thursday for the next couple of weeks. Motorists that travel I-85 regularly can expect more slow downs and lane closures as the summer progresses as the project progresses which is a good sign," said Rebecca White with Alabama Department of Transportation.

There have been several accidents near the outer loop construction lately. One of the crashes even killed a man. But despite the death, local resident John Center doesn't think the area is dangerous.

"Maybe high risk but I don't think it's dangerous. Again, I think once they're finished with it I think it's going to help the community and help people on Pike Road because of the availability to have more lanes and being open," Center said.

The City of Montgomery says local residents shouldn't see too much impact outside of longer commute times, but they have some upcoming construction projects of their own to look out for.

"The project on Dexter Avenue that's probably in the very near term over the next 30 to 60 days that might be coming online and that's also a streetscape enhancement. That goes all the way from the court square fountain all the way up to Bainbridge Street at the capitol," said Chris Conway, Director of Public Works.

Conway hopes to finish all of dexter avenue by 2015 for the 50th anniversary of the first Selma to Montgomery march.
