Hundreds of Students Participate in Camp Bones

Radiology, respiratory therapy and lab work... it's not an ordinary day for eighth grade students in the Montgomery Public School system.

Students from Baldwin Art and Magnet School got a dose of different medical professions Tuesday at Baptist Health's Institute for Patient Safety and Medical Simulation.

It's a part of their annual Camp Bones where students see what type of training is necessary for jobs in the medical field.

They were able to listen to heartbeats, examine x-rays and feel for a pulse.

For MPS students, this camp is an introduction for the health science academy at Jeff Davis High School.

“Pretty much for me, an opportunity to see and explore more of my options, because I want to go into forensics, I’m just exploring more of it,” said Kara Moncrief, student.

“We're just really trying to light a fire under young people about the health-care careers, letting them know now in the eighth grade, you know, how you prepare. You know if wait until 12th grade and go gee,’ I’d like to be a physician’, it may be too late at that point,” explained Judi Miller.

During the three day camp, more than 600 students are expected to participate.
