High Speed Car Chase Turns Deadly
Authorities say an Ariton woman passing through Brantley was stopped by deputies, and during the traffic stop, she drove off leading them on a high speed chase that ended her life.
Deputies say they received a call that Melissa Wilkerson had taken a car from a family member without their permission and they say when they found her, they pulled her over at Beeline Convenience Store in Brantley.
"Officers got behind the vehicle, made a traffic stop. The young lady that was driving the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle, fled the scene," says Crenshaw County Investigator, Mike Johnson.
Investigators says she nearly T-boned a deputy's car as she ran a red light through this intersection. Then, she reached speeds over 60 miles per hour through neighborhoods and the housing authority. Shortly after, she lost control of the car, ran off the road and flipped the vehicle.
Johnson says, "She was thrown from the vehicle, the vehicle burst into flames. She was at a safe distance, thanks to the local officers."
Authorities say Wilkerson was taken to Crenshaw Community Hospital and flown by helicopter to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery where she later died from extensive injuries.
Deputies say there were not any passengers in the car and authorities were not injured in the chase or fire.
Alcohol is being considered in the investigation of the crash. Deputies also say Wilkerson was not wearing a seat belt when she lost control of the car.
