Greenville Retailers Gear Up For Holiday Shopping

By Amanda Wade

Business owners in Greenville are trying to encourage shoppers to stay local this year for the big retail weekend and they are hoping big deals might just keep those shoppers in the Camellia City this year.

As wreaths deck the streets of Downtown Greenville and store fronts fill with holiday cheer, store owners in the city say they are gearing up for a weekend of holiday shopping.
"We're going to be open from nine until whatever, possibly six or seven o'clock on Friday night, and then we'll be open again on Saturday. So, we're really trying to gear up for it," says Mary McKinley, owner of High Horse Gallery.
Another store owner just down the street says she is starting her holiday sales early, to try and get a jump start on the retail holidays.
"I decided to start my sale just a little bit early, to try to get the shoppers coming downtown to start with my sale," says Nancy Faulkenberry, owner of Nancy's Heirloom Shoppe.
With the Iron Bowl on Saturday, merchants say they are not expecting a big turn out for Small Business Saturday, because of last year's turn out which also fell on game day. But, retailers say they will still be open and some with special deals in honor of the big game.
Chae Brown, owner of Southern Mint Boutique and Blush Beauty Boutique says, "We were pretty much dead once the game started, but for the morning, we're going to have a special. So, hopefully people will come out and shop before they, you know, start to watch the game."
Some shoppers say they will be purchasing locally this year to help the community.
