Friendship Mission Preps for Thanksgiving Dinner

By Ellis Eskew

It's a big week at the Friendship Mission in Montgomery especially for cook Willie Russell who has been cooking there 8 years.
Right now, he's prepping turkeys for Thanksgiving.
5 done... 5 prepped... and at least 4 more to go before the big day.

"Already got turkey prepared. I got potato salad, English peas, candied yams, all the good works to go along with the Thanksgiving dinner," said Russell.

Ron Smith, director of the mission, says they expect anywhere from 100 to 120 people.

"It means a hearty meal, warm place to sit down, people to come together. We have people tell us what Thanksgiving means to them," said Smith.

For those who have fallen on hard times, it's something they are particularly grateful for this time of year.

"I'm glad I can celebrate Thanksgiving with a roof over my head, warm food, nice people. Same time-- nothing like family. Last year I was with my mom and siblings and what not, so big difference. But still grateful at the same time," said shelter guest Christopher Tolbert.

They are grateful for a place to call home even just for a few days.

"I've got some friends here and decided to come up and visit for several days. Get a chance to renew some acquaintances for a few days and enjoy the Montgomery area," said shelter guest Michael Anderson.

And the doors are open to anyone and everyone on Thanksgiving and throughout every day of the year.

"We try to make sure everybody gets a plate and everybody is fed well," said Smith.

The Friendship Mission is open from 7am to 7pm every day.
