Former Coaches, Players Weigh in on College Football Playoffs

The Bowl Championship Series, known as the BCS, will be no more starting in 2014 when a new college football playoffs system begins.

Since 1998, the Bowl Championship Series has designated the champion among college football teams. But in 2014, a playoff system will replace it. Playoffs have never before been a part of college football, though some, like former Auburn football coach Pat Dye, say there should have been a playoff tournament in place a long time ago.

"There's never ever been a true national champion," says Dye. "At the end of the season, who's to say that Alabama is better than Texas A&M? You need to play it off to find out who's the best, that's the only way to do it."

Though not everyone is impressed with the new playoff format. Former Alabama football coach Gene Stallings says the season is long enough.

"I'm against playoffs one-hundred percent," he says. "If you want to win the National Championship, win all your games."

A team from the SEC has won the BCS title for the last seven years but former Alabama quarterback Andrew Zow says the SEC may not be as successful with a playoff tournament.

"I think it may hurt the SEC when you say LSU, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama...those teams are very talented and high in the rankings and those teams may get left out."

But Dye says teams who don't make the playoffs don't deserve to be there.

"Well if we don't belong to be the champion, we don't need to be the champion," Dye says.

Auburn football coach Guz Malzahn says he's indifferent.

"You know what, I'm for whatever the rules are and we'll go by them and the SEC has been very successful so just I'm fine with it."
