Fatal Wreck Shuts Down I-85

By Alabama News Network

An accident involving two cars on interstate 85 this afternoon leaves one person dead.

The wreck shut down part of the road for hours, leaving many stuck in traffic.

"It was a worst case scenario, fatal collision," said Sgt. B.J. Champlin who worked the wreck with Montgomery Police.

Two vehicles collided on interstate 85, leaving three people injured at one person dead. Montgomery Police say that one person crossed over the median into the southbound lane.

"We have a single vehicle that's believed to have crossed over and struck another motorist head on. At the time of the collision we had four injuries, one life threatening," said Sgt. Champlin.

That life threatening injury was to the driver who jumped the median. They died on the way to the hospital. That makes 17 fatal collisions for Montgomery this year.

Keyonia Davidson was sitting on the exit ramp trying to merge when police stopped traffic.

"Yes sir, it was very bad. I was getting off on the exit to pick up lunch and the police immediately stopped me because they had to rotate the traffic around and I had to wait to get back and take another route," said Davidson.

She says it was difficult to watch because she knew how serious the wreck was.

"I was right there by it. I had to move to let the ambulance by. I was right there off the ramp. And I seen the car flipped over but I just started praying to God that everybody was ok."

While Davidson was stuck in the traffic, police diverted traffic to Atlanta highway but it was very slow going for several hours.
