Faith Matters: Churches Prepare For Christmas Services

By Brittany Bivins

With Christmas just days away, churches across our area are getting ready for special services, and they're expecting thousands to fill the pews.

We visited three churches in Pike County, which will each celebrate the season a little differently. First Baptist Church of Troy, Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church and Missionary Baptist Church will all hold Christmas Eve or Christmas services.

They say it's a good time for friends and family to gather and celebrate their faith.

"All the family is together, and that's probably the most unique part of it, is because people just aren't together that often and at Christmas, they are," said Luke Lane, pastor of First Baptist Church in Troy, which will hold a Christmas Eve service at 5:30.

Saint Martin of Tours will hold Christmas Eve masses at 5:30 and midnight. "There's something special about kind of welcoming Christmas Day at midnight, so it's a beautiful tradition all over the place, but even right here in a small city like Troy, where there's not a whole lot of Catholics, but we can still celebrate this special mass"

Saint Martin will also hold a Christmas Day mass at 10 A.M.

Missionary Baptist Church will take part in a community-wide celebration at Morningstar Baptist Church at 10 A.M. "Christmas is not a holiday. It's a holy day. The sad part about Christmas is it gets to be too commercialized and we have to keep Christ in Christmas and everything comes out of his birth," said George Gilchrist, Jr., pastor of Missionary Baptist Church.

Those Christmas services are open to the public, and the churches encourage the entire community to attend.
