Montgomery Prepares for the Weekend's Extreme Heat

You'll want to find a place to stay cool this weekend because we can expect triple-digit heat everywhere in our area.

There's really only one word to describe how it feels outside. It's hot.

It's this kind of triple-digit heat that is not only uncomfortable, but dangerous. According to the National Weather Service, excessive heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States. So, the American Red Cross is warning you to keep a close eye on certain at-risk groups.

"Definitely the elderly and definitely the kids, because they are probably outside playing and running around," said Grover Cleveland Henry Jr. with the American Red Cross.

Glennie Foster says that describes her grandchildren. She says a little heat won't keep them indoors.

"I'll try to make them stay in the house, but you know how kids are, they want to play," said Foster.

For those who don't have the option to simply go inside, the Salvation Army is doing it's best to help them stay hydrated and have a cool place to stay through the weekend.

"Monday we're going to monitor to see what the temperatures are like and what the need is, and if need be, we are going to open our dining room as a heat relief," said Captain Mark Gilliam with the Salvation Army.

That's not your only option to find relief from the heat. Montgomery's Parks and Recreation Department says you can also cool off at one of their community centers, while having a little fun.

"We have several facilities that are open on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with air conditioning. We have larger facilities with gymnasiums that are open on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and of course we have swimming pools that we operate," said Joanne Long with Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department.

To stay safe this weekend, it's important to remember to dress light, drink water, and stay indoors when necessary.
