Education Standards Stay the Same: Feds Don't Raise Passing Mark for Alabama Schools

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The federal government has given Alabama a waiver that will make it easier for public schools to make a passing grade under the No Child Left Behind Act.
   
The U.S. Department of Education has allowed Alabama to freeze the requirements at the 2011. That means the number of students need to pass standardized tests to achieve adequate yearly progress won't go up when the 2012 results are released next month.
   
The U.S. Department of Education said Friday that Alabama is one of 26 states receiving a waiver from some part of the decade-old law.
   
Alabama is moving toward measuring student achievement by tracking how much progress individual students make each year. The department cited that as one reason for Alabama's waiver.
