AP-US--School Bus Driver Shot UPDATE
Man linked to Ala. standoff was facing court
MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) - Police, SWAT teams and negotiators have surrounded a rural Alabama property where a man is believed to be holed up in an underground shelter after fatally shooting a school bus driver and fleeing with a 6-year-old child.
The standoff started Tuesday afternoon after a gunman boarded the stopped school bus in the small town of Midland City near Dothan. Authorities say the man shot the driver when he refused to let the child off the bus. The 66-year-old driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., died of multiple gunshots.
Neighbors say the property surrounded by police belongs to Jimmy Lee Dykes. Investigators have not released the suspect's name.
Court records show the 65-year-old Dykes had been scheduled to be in court Wednesday to face a charge of menacing neighbors.
