District 4 Residents Eat Christmas Dinner, Address Crime

Montgomery recorded it's 46th homicide today after an early morning shooting leaves one man dead.
Details surrounding the fatal shooting are very limited as Montgomery Police continue to investigate.

It's this kind of re-occuring violence that Councilman David Burkette is working to eliminate, especially in his own district where crime has been a problem.

Councilman Burkette held a dinner for members in his district to come together and fellowship. He says he hopes the dinner will help the community come together and reduce crime.

With 46 homicides so far in 2013, Montgomery residents say they're tired of the constant crime surrounding them.

"It's just a mess but we've got to pray," says resident Juanita Cleveland.

Burkette represents 23 neighborhoods, some that have been the backdrop of violent crime. He says it's the reason he hosts frequent neighborhood dinners, to bring the people in his district together.

"It helps with the crime because having an opportunity to meet and network and of course, sadly we've had our 46th murder today so this sort of brings a close knit way of getting people to respond."

About 100 people came to eat and meet their neighbors. James Pierce lives in the Westwood neighborhood and says he believes connecting with others could reduce violence in his area.

"We find out who we are and find out where different people live and find out what type of life they live."

Others echoed him.

"For everybody to get to know people," says Cleveland. "You know, to mingle and let you know what other people's neighborhoods is going through."

And there were even some from other neighborhoods that came to support the residents in District 4.

"To get out here and share time and spend some time with the people that we need to spend with," says Rob Spivery.

With just a few weeks left in 2013, these residents say they're looking forward to a more peaceful new year.
