Desmonte Leonard Appears In Court In Auburn Killings

Desmonte Leonard had a very brief first appearance in court Thursday.

Leonard went before a Lee County judge in Opelika Thursday morning.

The twenty-two year old is facing three counts of capital murder and two assault charges in the Auburn shootings last week.

Leonard told a judge he can't afford to pay for legal defense.

The judge appointed attorneys from Susan James and Associates out of Montgomery, to represent him.

It's the same law firm that assisted Leonard in turning himself into authorities on Tuesday.

Leonard was chained at the hands and feet during the brief appearance.

He will be held at the Montgomery County Detention Center under maximum security until his trial.
