Demopolis Preparing for Christmas on the River 2013

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  The city of Demopolis is getting ready to host its biggest annual tourist attraction of the year.

Christmas on the River is about two weeks away -- and volunteers are hard at work getting everything ready for the annual Demopolis holiday tradition.

The four day event features historic tours, arts and crafts, a barbeque cook-off, fireworks and more -- highlighted by a day time street parade and a night time nautical parade on the Tombigbee River.

Organizers say the event drew about 40,000 people to the city last year.

"Its just a spectacular event," said COTR Day Parade Chairman Ben Sherrod. "If somebody comes to Demopolis and doesn't like it, bring me their bill and I'll buy their gas back home."
Christmas on the River runs December 4th - 7th. A full schedule of events is available online at
