Demopolis Hosts 2012 Master National

By George McDonald

Bird hunting dogs from all over the country are in West Alabama for the 2012 Master National Retriever Competition.

Retrievers that qualify for the Master National are competing to be counted among the best in the country.

The dogs are tested retrieving birds on land and through and from water.

Handlers guide the dog's movements using only a whistle and hand signals.

"And you don't go out in the field, you're staying back on the lines, so you're directing a dog potentially at a hundred yards, this is absolutely teamwork, at the Master level this is a polished team," said Master National Field Marshall Janet Wood.

The city of Demopolis is host city for the event-- but the actual field tests are taking place at the State Cattle Ranch in Hale County. The competition wraps up Sunday.
