Hero’s who rushed to help at Corporal David Brown’s accidents were honored Thursday.
Back on September 11th Brown was escorting a funeral procession when his motorcycle and a car collided.
Then as Brown was being rushed by ambulance to a hospital, the vehicle rolled over and caught fire.
Police and city officials awarded the people that jumped into help at the police graduation today.
Twelve people were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty at Corporal David Brown’s accidents.
One of those people was an army nurse who arrived shortly after his motorcycle crash.
Capt. Tonya Perkins, Army Nurse, Ft Benning, says, “I ran to him to check him monitor him and provide care for him along with some of the other citizens that were there.”
Perkins worked to help keep him awake and alert until an ambulance arrived.
“I’m like a humorous type person so I used that a lot with Corporal Brown through my husband from police officer to police officer so he had an idea of who was with him and who would be with him until medical care came,” said Perkins.
Perkin’s husband Otis arrived at the 2nd accident scene, when Brown’s ambulance rolled over and caught fire.
He along with other award recipients pulled people out and put the flames out.
Capt. Otis Perkins, Montgomery Police, says “Everything was just in slow motion just the mere fact that Dave Brown had just suffered a catastrophic accident as he did and for the ambulance to turn over like it did it was almost like it wasn’t happening but we knew we had to act on it.”
Perkins says all he could think about at the time was helping his friend and co-worker Brown.
“I feel honored most of all but however just to know we was able to get David Brown to Baptist Hospital for the medical treatment that’s the most significant part that I feel good about,” said Perkins.
All of those awarded received hugs of gratitude from Browns family and thanks from a grateful police department.
