Butler Co. School Board Receives Threats in Supt. Contract Renewal

By Catalina Trivino

Tensions are high in Butler County as everyone wonders whether the school board will renew the contract of the superintendent. Board members say they've received threats, which is why they've delayed a decision.

Butler County School Board president, Mickey Jones, says he received a call from a member of the community who threatened the school board about its decision on whether to renew Superintendent, Darren Douthitt's contract. He says the threats have gone too far.

"That's why this is not on there because we're afraid someone is going to get hurt," Said Butler County School Board President, Mickey Jones.

Butler County School Board president, Mickey Jones, says the call led to the change in this agenda.

There was supposed to be a discussion about superintendent, Darren Douthitt's, contract. While Jones did not specify what the threat was. He says it was enough to cancel the contract discussion.

"We as board members are here for the children we are not here for political gain, political innuendos by whoever. This is all about the children people!" Said Jones.

And an odd sight -- as more than 100 people walked through doors of the board room with law enforcement staying alert for safety during the meeting.

"[I] talked to the superintendent. [He] told me who he thought it was. [I] talked with that person whenever he arrived to the board meeting. He assured me there was not going to be any trouble. That he did not intend for it to be a threat," Said Sheriff, Kenny Harden.

Sheriff, Kenny Harden, says that caller did not stay for the meeting. He says no charges will be filed.

"If someone actually called to make a threat they are degrading what we are trying to do... We are trying to make a better education, quality education for our children. We want our children to be ready to go into society and this does not show them how adults should act," Said Georgiana mother, Rebecca Oikle.

Jones says the board members will decide when to discuss the superintendent's contract. They say they'll do it on their own time and no date has been set.

Douthitt's contract ends May 2014. He also declined to comment. The next school board meeting is scheduled for October 17. Alabama News Network will keep you updated.
