Bullock Co. Church's Air Conditioners Stolen For Third Time

By Brittany Bivins

Thieves hit a church for the third time, but instead of taking cash, investigators say they're stealing the air conditioners.

The last time this church's air conditioning was stolen they put up this wall to try to keep them safe, but this time the thieves broke right in

"We were trying to deter or stop, but of course, with any thief, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it. And they did," said Pastor Ronald Earles.

Liberty Baptist Church has been here for 175 years. Members say the thefts hurt the entire community.

"We were just shocked again to see that we have been, that we'd been robbed again," said Wes Mahaffey, a deacon at the church.

But Bullock County Sheriff's officials say it's not uncommon for this area. At least one other church has reported an air conditioner stolen in the last year.

"It has copper, you know when the copper prices go up, they take a $15,000 air conditioning and break it down and get $100 worth of copper out of it," said Chad Faulkner, a deputy.

Church members say it's a financial burden to constantly replace them.

"All of them are having to do more things, going into different avenues to try to protect what they do have and have to have other fundraisers to raise money to replace what gets damaged," said Mahaffey.

Pastor Ronald Earles says he has a message for the thieves.

"You know, as a church, as Christians we would love them, regardless of what the did. They know what they're doing is wrong. And one day, they'll have to answer for it."

Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the thefts. If you have any information on this case, contact the Bullock County Sheriff's Office at 738-2670.
