The Lowndes Co. Sheriff's Office investigates a drowning death in the Blackbelt community.

Investigators have identified the victim as 48 year old Julius Jerome Smith of the Blackbelt.

They say Smith was fishing in a pond on private property with a friend when the boat they were in capsized Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the friend was able to make it back to shore but Smith drowned before he could be rescued.

Alma Gordon was the victim's fiance'.

"I'm so shocked, I'm speechless, I don't really know what to say," said Gordon. "It hurts me so bad for real."

Investigators say Smith's death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
