Auburn University students are getting a new research center. Half of the money for the new $28 million building came from the state, brought in largely by Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard, so the center is named after him.

"I think it'll have a long impact because of what it'll be dealing with. Food safety, how to feed the world, how to discover ways to make food go further. How to end hunger," Hubbard said.

Auburn University leaders say the building is a golden opportunity for students.

"This is very nice compared to what we had earlier. There's brand new computers. Like they said earlier, it's gonna be the strongest computer in Alabama on the second floor," said Andrew Pinyar, and Agriculture Economics major.

A tour of the 84,000 foot building includes 20 high-tech laboratories for five different schools of Auburn researchers.

"I think they're very excited. It's always exciting when we're able to go into a new classroom. It raises the bar for students to get a better education," said Pinyar.

Auburn University officials say they think the center could bring in several million dollars in grants every year, which they hope will magnify the economic impact.
