Auburn Fans Will Hit 4 Construction Zones On Game Day
In less than two weeks, thousands of people will be making their way to Auburn for the first football game of the season. If you're driving from Montgomery, listen up. You will be battling road construction on your way to the plains.
It's not the orange Auburn fans want to see. Cones marking the sides of the highway giving notice that you've entered a construction zone.
"It sounds like I'm going to have to leave a lot earlier. Maybe another hour earlier to get there on time," says Tiger fan Ron Johnson.
The Alabama Department of Transportation says there are four projects between Montgomery and Auburn that Tiger fans need to plan for.
1. Work is taking place at the Perry Hill Road Exit just past downtown Montgomery
2. Work is taking place on the "Outer Loop" between mile marker 13 and 16 near the Waugh Exit
3. Resurfacing at the Montgomery and Macon County line between mile marker 18 and 22
4. Resurfacing near the Macon and Lee County line between mile marker 35 and 47
No construction work or lane closures will happen on Saturdays, but drivers will hit construction zone speed limits which are 45 to 55 miles per hour.
"We're going to have additional troopers out there for increased game day traffic to be highly visible," says State Trooper Sgt. Steve Jarrett.
Jarrett suggests leaving early and anticipate traffic, and Auburn fans are taking his advice.
"You might have to leave way early, because everyone will be leaving early," says Auburn fan Jermaine Jones. "You may have to leave a couple hours early!"
At the end of last season, ALDOT opened a new exit off I-85 that provides another route into Auburn University's campus. Fans say they will really get to take advantage of it this season, and it will help relieve some of the game day traffic.
Auburn will take on Washington State in its first game August 31. Kick off is set for 6.
