Autauga Co. Reserve Deputies Raise Money for New Equipment

By Jessica Gertler

Volunteer Deputies from Autauga County are hosting a rodeo this weekend in Autaugaville. All proceeds will buy equipment that they say they desperately need.

There are 17 reserve deputies in Autauga County. Monica Montgomery is one of them.

"I've been called out to break-ins, drug problems within homes and car accidents," says Montgomery.

Montgomery volunteers up to 30 hours a week to help the sheriff's office protect the community. Sometimes the situation is dangerous. Montgomery says the program doesn't have the money to replace her or any other member's vest.

"I have been shot at before, and thankfully, not hit. But it's a possibility, and if it hits this, it has the chance of going through," she says.

Deputy Sean Brosius says the program is hosting a rodeo in the R.H. Kirkpatrick Arena in Autaugaville this weekend. The goal is to raise enough money to buy all 17 members a new bullet proof vest.

"I've got to tell you they are probably about $600 a piece. I just don't know how much we are going to make. This is the first year. We are hoping to make something," he says.

Anything to help protect the lives of those who protect us.

"Nobody wants to be out the street and be vulnerable. We want to be taken care, and we want to take care of the public," says Montgomery.

The doors open at 5:30 on Friday and Saturday night.

Tickets are $12 at the door, and it's free for children 6 and under.

Pre-sale tickets are $10. They are being sold at the sheriff's office and at the Country Mart in Billingsley.
