Autauga County schools don't have the fortified rooms like Montgomery, but Superintendent Spence Agee says they are on top of school safety.

"Every year in the summer we do a complete analysis of our safety plans. The fire departments have helped us to determine safe areas inside the school in event of a tornado we go to our safe areas," Agee said.

Prattville Kindergarten has these safe areas clearly posted around the school. The principal says it takes a little more work to help keep all the five year olds prepared.

"We just talk about it a lot on the intercom. Teachers do a great job talking about it in their classrooms and about weather. We don't want to frighten children but we want to make sure we practice so that we're always prepared to be safe if we need to be," Principal Jodi Womble said.

The faculty at schools across Autauga County take safety very seriously, because many are also parents themselves.

"Every principal just about in the system has a child that goes to the system. I have a child that goes to school here. So you can rest assured that if for no other reason our children are here. We're very concerned about safety in every aspect," said Prattville Junior High principal Kenneth Childree.

Montgomery superintendent Barbara Thompson wants to remind other parents that safety shouldn't stop once a child leaves school.

"We pick safe places for our kids to go in schools. Parents need to do that at home. So if for some reason a parent is not at home or a child gets there early, not from our schools, but they need to know the safe places in their homes too," Thompson said.
