An Alabama senator says he will push legislation requiring drug testing of some welfare applicants even though a similar law has been struck down in Florida.

Republican Senator Trip Pittman from Daphne says his bill is much narrower than the Florida law because it applies only to people with drug convictions in the last five years.

The Florida law applied to all applicants.

Pittman also proposed the drug testing bill during the last legislative session.

It passed in the Senate, but died in the House, without coming to a vote.

The 2014 Alabama legislative session begins Tuesday.
