UpdateAlabama Senate Waits to Address Education Budget
Republican leaders of the Alabama Senate canceled plans Thursday to take up the state education budget and a pay raise for K-12 employees.
Chairman of the Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee, Republican Trip Pittman of Daphne, says Republican leaders decided to postpone both measures until next week. He says some senators wanted more time to study the budget and some wanted changes in the pay raise.
The governor originally recommended a 2 .5 percent raise. The House approved 2 percent. Pittman's committee changed that to a 1 percent raise, with another 1 percent bonus possible if state tax collections exceed expectations. Pittman says some senators want to go back to 2 percent, and he wants to make sure the budget will balance.
