Checks and Balances: State May Give Counties More Power
The state may be handing over more power to counties, and giving them a choice to accept or reject changes affecting them in Alabama's constitution.
The proposal was made Friday to state lawmakers rewriting the Alabama Constitution.
There are four potential changes to county powers. One would allow county commissioners to approve state laws changing the function of local governments.
Another option would give some other powers to county governments including the ability for counties to oversee themselves while the Legislature is not in session.
