Alabama Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus says he will not seek re-election after his current term.

The 6th District congressman made the announcement during a live interview Monday on a Birmingham TV station. Bachus says he will continue working hard for the remaining months of his term.

Bachus won an 11th term in Congress last November, easily defeating a Democratic challenger after an unusually stiff challenge in the GOP primary.

Bachus is a longtime member of the House Financial Services Committee, which he chaired for six years. His district includes much of metropolitan Birmingham and central Alabama into Tuscaloosa County. The district includes Chilton and Coosa counties in our area.
