Car accidents are the leading cause of deaths among high school students, and its chances of happening are magnified when a cell phone enters the equation.
ALFA insurance and state educators are starting a campaign to stop teenagers from texting and driving.
ALFA Drive Smart is a contest where Alabama students make a video discouraging distracted driving.
It will educate students of the dangers of texting and driving, so they don't become part of the growing statistic.
"The students that are driving today have many distractions, and this effort is one that i think will save lives, it is the most critical thing we can do - protect our students,” said State School Superintendent, Dr. Joseph Morton.
This contest starts January 1st and ends March 31st.
Prizes for the winner may include cash, a IPad, IPod Nano, or IPod Touch.
