AEA: Alabama Legislature Creating Back-Door Approach for Charter Schools

By Alabama News Network

The Alabama Legislature is considering a bill to give school systems flexibility in determining their rules and regulations, but some believe it's a back-door approach to create charter schools.

The Alabama Education Association believes the bill may allow schools to strip away teachers' rights.

The bill was approved last week by the House Education Policy Committee.

House Speaker Mike Hubbard supports the legislation and says it has nothing to do with charter schools.

State School Superintendent Tommy Bice says he believes the legislation would increase creativity in schools.
