From Montgomery -- local firefighters and EMS personnel participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb today to mark the anniversary of September 11th...

Firefighters, EMS responders, the community... Hundreds of them climbed 110 flights of stairs -- that's the height of the World Trade Centers of New York.

The elevator is not an option. And even if it were, you probably wouldn't have any takers.

"I just think it's the least we can do as American citizens to pay our respect to the firemen, servicemen who lost their lives and saved other people. So it's an honor for me," Said one of the participants, Eric Washington.

Heroes from across Alabama are climbing the steps at the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery. It represents what 343 fallen firefighters went through the morning of 9-11.

"[This is] something we wanted to take a part of and honor those men and women who laid down their lives for our country. We're just happy to be here, just doing maybe a little something to bring people's minds back to that... about what the fire service sacrificed," Said Brandon Strickland, a firefighter from Decatur Fire & Rescue.

Having the option to climb with as much or as little gear as they wanted. Some suited up with an extra 75 lbs. of equipment. But full gear or no gear, t's still hard.

But this comradery often spoken of, now, demonstrated... is well worth it.

"It just means a lot being a firefighter... being able to set an example for other firefighters coming up... what kind of stuff we endure for each other and the type of brotherhood we have," Said Montgomery Firefighter, Allen Wiggins.

With each step, not only did people remember the lives lost, but they also raised money to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Event organizers say those funds will be spread amongst families of fallen firefighters across the nation.
