No Vote Yet on Cockfighting Bill

By WNCF Staff

MOTNGOMERY (WNCF) - The House Agriculture and Forestry Committee did not vote after hearing various arguments on cockfighting Wednesday.

The proposed bill would call for fines up to $10,000 for a first offense and a year in prison – significantly larger than the current penalty of a misdemeanor and a fine of $50 or less.

Officials with the Humane Society call cockfighting cruel and inhumane, while breeders say the birds are also raised for purposes other than fighting.
