Female WWII Pilot to be Honored

By WNCF Staff

TUSCALOOSA (WNCF) – An Alabama woman who tested American warplanes in the 1940s will be honored with the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Mary Helen Foster of Northport will receive the prestigious award in Washington.

Women were not allowed in combat zones during the war, but Foster flew C-47s carrying paratroopers. She also delivered planes to bases, tested planes, and transported cargo.

"Female World War II Pilot to be honored" is in need of a correction. The Medal of Honor is awarded for combat valor. Ms. Foster is to receive the Congressional Gold Medal a civilian award
