VictoryLand Closes Doors on Casino

Country Crossing Employees Rally

By Caroline Kelly

SHORTER, AL (WNCF) - The battle between Milton McGregor and the Task Force for the enforcement on illegal gambling has become an intriguing one. Late Monday night McGregor closed the doors to Quincy's 777 casino for what he deemed were "computer upgrades," in order to comply with an Alabama Supreme Court order. Commander of the Task Force, John Tyson, did not agree that McGregor was attempting to comply.

"Late last night, Milton McGregor locked the doors at VictoryLand and began altering his gambling equipment in direct violation of a court order," said Tyson in a statement released Tuesday morning.

"The court told McGregor he had to preserve the evidence. Everyone knows what it means to preserve evidence - you don't alter it, you don't destroy it, you leave it exactly as it was."

The court is expected to make a decision as soon as Wednesday on whether or not these electronic bingo machines are illegal.

800 people out of jobs because of this. People that gamble will gamble either in dwellings or in vacant buildings etc.. This is a shame. You can not stop people from gambling, and in a bad economic time like now, I think Its real dumb to lay off 800 people

You are so smart. You are similar in your protection of prejudice the same as it was in Birmingham before we saw Rosa get on the bus. Now you protect the illegal activities in the name of what ?

I can't believe the Gov is shutting down something illegal that we depend on. I also depend on crack and meth and they are trying to shut that down too. Look at all the money my bro makes dealing dope, and they are trying to shut him down too and he spends a lot of money on cars, ho's, and helps a lot of people. Why is it the gummmet wants to shut down all the illegal things. Don't they know that some of us depend on them ? If someone makes money off'n it, it oorta be ok, cause they spread the money around an we all benefits. So get rid of that stupid gov, who is after all this stuff..

Let's just say the machines were legal. What excuse will the govenor have then? He is more interested in his agenda that for the people who lost their jobs. Get rid of this ego maniac! He just added 2,000 or so people to the unemployment rolls, possible welfare rolls and yet he persists? I hope voters will check out their new candidates more carefully in November and not elect another selfish person who doesn't care about the people of Alabama.

I cannot believe that the Gov. of Alabama could be so stupid. In today's economy he caused all those people to lose their jobs. Maybe he didn't get paid as much from the casinos he shut down as he got from the Indian Casinos? I would surely make sure this guy never gets elected for anything again including dog catcher. I am sorry for all those people who list their job. Now they should take his uncaring person's job from him in the next election. Not running again? Then the state is well rid of him but too late before he caused so many so much pain.

What a shame. My family was getting ready to go in March. With the shape of the economy you would think government could find something else to do. By closing Victoryland you have added more people to the unemployment line. I agree with Lorri - shame on you Governor Riley!

What a shame it is to have these places close. I live in Georgia and not only myself but my family and friends spent a great deal of money in Alabama, not only at the gaming places but on motel rooms and dining out. In this slow economy it was nice to go someplace close but still feel like you was on vacation and maybe come home with a little cash. Why with jobs being so scarce why would he take jobs away from the people of his state and put more families in such a position. Shame on you Governor Riley!!!!

Leave Victoryland and the places alone. Shame on you for taking the tax money away from the State of Alabama and causing more people to loose their jobs. This establishment is well run, good security and a fun place to go. This Governor needs a reality check. What about the crime rate?

This is a crime to close the doors and shut down the gaming at Victoryland. What is the Governor thinking? Didn't even have money to pay people there State Taxes back and he wants to close a cash cow for the State of Alabama. The Governor must have nothing else to do with his time. Try catching the real criminals, get rid of the Gangs and Drugs. Let's keep people working and not taking there jobs away.
